Sugar Unitrans provides sugar cane logistics and agricultural services to Illovo Sugar (Malawi) Limited both at Nchalo on the Shire River in the South and at Dwangwa where thriving cane fields face Lake Malawi.
Flat terrain and favourable soil conditions at Nchalo permit cane payloads in Unitrans landtrains that are among the African sugar industry’s best. Pulling six trailers each, the fleet of powerful 4-wheel drive haulers deliver up to 54 ton payloads to the mill. Unitrans engineers utilise load distribution and appropriate tyre technology to keep field compaction levels remarkably low, considering the size of payload.
At Dwangwa, the sugar mill receives cane in large bundles of 5 tons or more. Unitrans has fleeted up with loaders and trailers capable of meeting these special requirements. Similar fleeting is used by Unitrans to transport cane from the Dwangwa Growers, a group of local Malawian farmers who also supply the Dwangwa mill.
