MOLASSES CONTRACT RENEWAL BRINGS NEW TANKERS TO FLEET
Renewal of a 3 year molasses logistics contract with Tongaat-Hulett Sugar has occasioned the purchase of five new tanker trucks and the refurbishing of five units in the existing Unitrans Sugar and Agriculture tanker fleet. This will result in a 10 tanker molasses fleet, providing about 10% more haulage capacity than the previous year.
Unitrans Sugar and Agriculture anticipates transporting about 260 000 tons of molasses in the coming 2008/2009 season which is an increase over last year. Initially molasses is transported from Zululand sugar mills to NCP in Durban for processing. Unitrans then transports CMS, a molasses by-product to Voërmol for use in production of animal feed. A portion of the CMS is also hauled in Unitrans tankers to the Felixton area for farm fertiliser use. .
