UNITRANS FORESTRY DEPOT RTMS ACCREDITED
Unitrans Supply Chain Services has been an early participant in RTMS (Road Transport Management System) and the company continues to certify strategically positioned depots to RTMS standards. SANRAL (South African National Road Transport Ltd) on its website, describes RTMS as a major project and says, “RTMS encourages consignees, consignors and transport operators engaged in the road logistics value chain to implement a vehicle management system that preserves road infrastructure, improves road safety and increases the productivity of the logistics value chain.” Unitrans Sugar and Agriculture General Manager (South Africa and Swaziland) Robby Stevenson says his company sees real value in the system. “RTMS participation is important in forestry because some of the largest companies are now only allowing tenders from logistics providers with RTMS accreditation. RTMS is based on self-regulation and so a haulier who consistently operates responsibly with regard to driver training and qualification, legal load limits and speeding, then may be allowed to apply for design approval of larger-load vehicles. The whole concept is fewer trucks on the road which are operated responsibly.” In Mpumalanga, where Stevenson oversees Unitrans forestry operations, the company’s Ngodwana depot is RTMS certified. In this region, which includes operations from the company’s Barberton depot, the Unitrans-Multidrive has become a familiar sight on Mondi and SAPPI lands where Unitrans provides logistics services. The Mpumalanga Multidrive fleet has grown considerably because of the unit’s ability to eliminate or minimise the short haul. Unitrans first adapted Multidrive 8x6-wheel drive and 6-wheel steering technology to its sugar operations where the highly manoeuvrable superior traction units have made a name for themselves on a number of sugar estates in Sub-Saharan Africa. RTMS certification is also being achieved at the company’s sugar logistics depots.
